A Look At The Importance Of Dental Hygiene

By Adriana Noton

Throughout childhood dentists, parents, and even teachers in school teach the importance of dental hygiene. You are told to brush three times a day and to floss for a beautiful smile, in hopes that those habits would extend into adulthood. The best thing about taking care of the health of your teeth and mouth is that it is so easy to do and takes only minutes a day to achieve.

A healthy mouth is one that not only looks good; it is a mouth that smells good also. Good oral hygiene means that the teeth are clean and free of debris and plaque buildup. The gums are pink and do not hurt or bleed whenever you floss or brush your teeth. And, there are no constant battles or problems with bad breath.

One of the most obvious reasons why to take care of your gums and teeth is for how you look. Brushing and flossing prevents cavities and the loss of teeth unnecessarily. You get to enjoy a beautiful smile and feel good about how you look. A dentist can remove stains caused by coffee, tea, and tobacco and polish teeth to shine their whitest.

It is also easier to prevent certain illnesses and diseases. Each time you have a cleaning, your dentist is looking at not only the teeth, but also your gums and whole mouth. They are able to catch oral cancer, which is highly curable if caught early. They are also able to spot infections in the gums, which can lead to gum disease and the loss of teeth and other health issues.

Not only does proper oral hygiene take care of your mouth, but it also affects your overall health. Studies have shown that there is a link between heart attacks and strokes to gum disease, all because of poor dental care. In addition to that, when the teeth are in bad shape, eating habits can be affected causing you to either gain or lose an unhealthy amount of weight.

Getting into a regular habit of cleaning your teeth and mouth is easy to do, and one that does not take much time. Prevention is always the key, and it is as simple as brushing your teeth at the very least, twice a day. Flossing should be done at least once a day, although twice a day is good too. This gets everything from between the teeth.

Other actions you can take to keep the teeth and gums in beautiful shape are things such as dental visits, eliminating tobacco products, and watching what you eat. Water is a friend to teeth, drinking water after you eat helps to rinse the teeth clean of debris and bacteria. When cleaning your teeth, do not forget to give your tongue a good brushing to remove bacteria also.

Making good oral hygiene a habit is the key to a healthy mouth, beautiful smile, and good health overall. It takes just minutes a day to floss and brush to keep your teeth clean and gums healthy. The importance of dental hygiene is often underestimated until someone finds themselves with health issues caused by poor dental health care.
